About Australian Dental Care
Australia has approximately 17,000 registered dental practitioners across around 10,000 private and public practices. Dental care is not covered by Medicare for most adults, though the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) provides up to $1,095 in basic dental services over two years for eligible children aged 0–17 with a Medicare card.
Private health insurance with dental extras is held by around half of all Australians. Major health funds including Bupa, Medibank, HCF, NIB, and CBHS typically cover a percentage of examinations, cleans, fillings, and other treatments. Exact cover depends on your policy level and annual limits — check with your fund before booking.
Public dental services are available for eligible patients through state programs: SA Dental Service (South Australia), Dental Health Services Victoria (Victoria), and NSW Health public dental clinics (New South Wales). Eligible patients include current Health Care Card and Pensioner Concession Card holders. Wait times apply for non-emergency treatment.
